This one day workshop is designed to help you learn the basics of painting outside on location and the techniques to capture the light, atmosphere and scene under natural light and weather conditions. The location will be on location outdoors at the Tides Inn Resort weather permitting. In the event of weather, instruction will be located at Allure Art Center in White Stone.

This workshop will be given by Kim Hall, a nationally recognized and award winning painter from Richmond, Virginia. She is an avid plein air painter that travels frequently across the country with her trusty K-9 companion Romeo searching for those inspiring landscapes and competing in juried art shows. When not painting outdoors she can be found in her Richmond or Montross studios painting commissions, quirky still life’s or larger landscapes inspired by her plein air studies. The Virginia native and lifelong artist holds a degree from George Mason University and continued her studies at The Corcoran School of Art. Her evocative and vibrant paintings can be seen in galleries and plein air events throughout the U.S. She is a member of the following professional organizations and groups – Oil Painters of America, American Impressionist Society, Women Painters of the Southeast, Virginia Plein Air Painters and Mid-Atlantic Plein Air Painters. Her works are frequently showcased locally at Allure Art Center.

Recommended Supplies List for Plein Air Painting Basics:
This is a general list of what you will need for painting outdoors. You may already have many of these supplies and a system you prefer, some of these are just suggestions and some things I use and find are a necessity when I work. If you have any questions about the supplies or what to get feel free to contact me, and this list is for oils but can be adjusted for your preferred medium.
– Plein Air easel or 1/2 box French easel: there are so many great set-ups out there now but I highly recommend something light and portable.
– Bag for supplies: a back pack, messenger bag, or a rolling bag, the easier to carry the better.
– Brushes: variety that you are comfortable with
– Paints: I work in oils but you may bring whatever medium you work with.
– Palette: most easels come with one, use it!
– Palette knife
– Solvent and sealable solvent container for cleaning brushes
– Canvas panels, stretched canvases, boards or paper, depending on your medium
– Paper towels (I like Viva)
– Wet ones, to clean paint off hands and everything else
– Trash bag (small plastic grocery bags work fine)
– Wet storage box for transporting finished works (I keep pizza boxes in my car)
– Small sketchbook and a couple of pencils or pens
– View finder
– Small digital camera or phone w/camera
– Umbrella and Hat for shade
– Sunscreen and bug spray for protection
– Water to drink

Instruction will be done using oil paints but techniques and principles learned can translate to other mediums.

Tentative Schedule:
Meet Saturday morning at the Tides Inn Resort outside at the front entrance. Head out to a planned location and paint a series of small quick studies. Take a one hour break for lunch then meet at planned location for a longer afternoon painting. In the event of weather the class may be moved to the Allure Art Center in White Stone.

Instructor will do a quick demo at the beginning of each painting session to get the ball rolling.
